My target audience is for most ages, 16 – 25+. This is because they are the ages of the people that go to college. Although I believe that my magazine will appeal to the younger students, maybe 16 – 18 as it is a little busy and I used lots of bright colours. It also is for the students in schools that are look to go to the college next year, this is because it tell them the sort of info that they will need to get started as it also give the info that a first year going on second year needs to know, they will know what they are doing. It should appeal to both genders, as I was careful to use boy, girl and some unisex colours. This stops it being biased and means that neither gender are worried about being seen to read it. In a college the social positioning is very mixed meaning it doesn’t matter who you talk to, because they don’t mind answering any question that you might have or just hanging out (or they don’t normally). This means that it is not so hard to design it as they will accept it, if it looks nice and stands out from other magazines. They will all have the same sort of interests as they all came to this college in the first place; so to use this to my advantage I used the field at the back of the college as my stage for the cover photo. I choose to use this part of the college as it is the most social, as this is were students go to met their friends or to chill, they do go there to work on homework or to have lessons. It is focused on appealing to the whole college not just one subject but it is promoting different parts of the college. For example it promotes sports and main events, the new building and the courses that the college does.
It’s more for the students, but it can also be for their parents, as they might want to know about the events so, they know what their child will be doing when they stay to be part of a club. This magazine can also be for the teachers as it talks about a new building (so them being teachers will need to know about it) and the system for the lockers might have been changed, so they need to know about that to.
The two models that I used for the front cover shows the student population well I think when it is put together with where they are in the college. As they are both smiling and talking and just having a good time, and even though they both have at lest one folder of work (the boy held it the opposite side to the camera half hiding it) to show that they have a lesson soon, but their faces don’t show any worry. Which shows that they either don’t mind being in class or they are just enjoying their talk. I believe that this will appeal to the audience as everyone like to have a good time even if it is only a shot time. Their clothes are unto date with the latest style, this make them eye catching and people want to know, what it is about.
At the start of this preliminary task I know how to use the digital cameras and I used one to take many photos, which most of I didn’t use but had in case needed. But I didn’t know everything. Over the course I learnt about close-up, medium and long shots, I also learnt about worm’s eye view but not that much more on birds eye view.
I didn’t know much about the Macs but I know a little about they worked. I could use simple functions such as Word, PowerPoint, etc. but the one main thing that didn’t know how to use was Photoshop. I had no clue where to start, but over the course of making both pages of the magazine I learnt how to use it. Then I learnt how to make the best of it by trying out different styles, colours, and sizes and messed with the shadows and the back lighting of the text. I put different images on it and changed the sizes of them and I also made some of them black and white, and changed the backing colour but they worked better with the images in full original colour. I learnt to work with the different layers and how to turn them on and off to see what affect that certainty part of the page has no the overall effect.
To be successful in the main task I need to learnt more about Photoshop to make my work look more eye catching so that it will stand out to people that don’t even think to look too much at the magazines as they walk by, and I need to make it less busies but to much less as that is what, I think make some types of people interested in the first place.
Overall I believe that this was a great success and I think that lots of people will like my design and be drawn to read my magazine. I got some feedback on my work and one said that there was only really one improvement that they could see, and that was about were I took the colours for in the photo for some of the cover lines. This only really means two of the cover lines (the blue one, and the red one) because the objects that I took the colours form are not that easy to see.
The blue one was to get the colour of the blue folder, which in the shot, is being held by the male model on the wrong side of his leg. It can stile be seen and I use the colour as it is a striking colour and stands bold against the many shades of green.
The other colour was the red. This one was taken from the red bin, which is partly behind the tree and partly behind the male model. I used this colour as again as it stands out against the greens well, and it draws you eye to what the students are most interested in, which is fashion. And another said about the pink writing on the contents page. They said that it would be better in white or black as the pink seems to blend into the background.
They really like my design, they both said that the layout of the text was very go as it used the space well because it covered up unimportant parts of the photo but let you see the important part e.g. you could see the faces of the two models. They also said that it was good how the lines of text were spaced apart so that you could still see the rust of the photo through the text itself.
They also said that the iconic image on the cover as the two models are having fun and it is an action shot. This is not always fond on the front of magazines as their models are normally static so that the so that they are sure that they get the ‘perfect’ shot. But I believe that the cover looks better when the it’s an action shot and the models doing something.
I agree with both my freed back sources that it would have been better if the main colour that I used for the texts were in the foreground. And the text on the contents page would be better in a different colour. But the overall colour scheme works really well.
